Xanax (alprazolam) Side Effects, Dosage, Addiction & Withdrawal. What is Xanax, and how does it work (mechanism of action)? Alprazolam (Xanax XR, Niravam), is an anti- anxiety medication in the benzodiazepine family, the same family that includes diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), flurazepam (Dalmane), and others. Alprazolam and other benzodiazepines act by enhancing the effects of gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter (a chemical that nerve cells use to communicate with each other) that inhibits activity in the brain. It is believed that excessive activity in the brain may cause anxiety or other psychiatric disorders. The FDA approved alprazolam in October 1. What brand names are available for alprazolam? There isn't enough information to know if garlic is effective for the other conditions people use it for, including: treating a special condition involving high cholesterol in people with HIV/AIDS, earaches, arthritis, allergies, colds, flu, traveler's diarrhea, and others. Possibly Effective for.. Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). As people age, their arteries tend to lose their ability to stretch and flex. Garlic seems to reduce this effect. Taking a specific garlic powder supplement (Allicor, INAT- Farma, Moscow, Russia) twice daily for 2. Higher doses of this product seem to provide more benefits in women than men when taken over a four year period. Research with other products containing garlic along with other ingredients (Kyolic, Total Heart Health, Formula 1. Wakunga) have also shown benefits. Colon cancer, rectal cancer. Research suggests that eating garlic can reduce the risk of developing colon or rectal cancer. Also, in people diagnosed with a certain type of colon and rectal tumors, taking high doses of aged garlic extract daily for 1. However, other garlic supplements do not seem to offer the same benefit. High blood pressure. Some research shows that garlic by mouth can reduce blood pressure by as much as 7% or 8% in people with high blood pressure. Most studies have used a specific garlic powder product (Kwai, from Lichtwer Pharma). Prostate cancer. Men in China who eat about one clove of garlic daily seem to have a 5. Also, population research shows that eating garlic may be associated with a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. But other research suggests that eating garlic does not affect prostate cancer risk in men from Iran. Early clinical research suggests that taking garlic extract supplements might reduce the risk of prostate cancer or reduce symptoms associated with prostate cancer. Tick bites. People who consume high amounts of garlic over about an 8- week period seem to have a reduced number of tick bites. But it's not clear how garlic compares to commercially available tick repellants. Ringworm. Applying a gel containing 0. Jock itch. Applying a gel containing 0. Athlete's foot. Applying a gel containing 1% ajoene, a chemical in garlic, seems to be effective for treating athlete's foot. Also, applying a garlic gel with 1% ajoene seems to be about as effective as the medicine Lamisil for treating athlete's foot. Possibly Ineffective for.. Breast cancer. Taking garlic does not seem to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Cystic fibrosis. Research suggests that taking garlic oil macerate daily for 8 weeks does not improve lung function, symptoms, or the need for antibiotics in children with cystic fibrosis and lung infection. Diabetes. Some research suggests that taking a specific garlic product (Allicor, INAT- Farma, Moscow, Russia) along with antidiabetes medication for 4- 2. However, analyses of research suggest that garlic does not seem to have any effect on blood sugar or cholesterol in people with or without diabetes. Inherited high cholesterol. In children with high levels of low- density lipoprotein (LDL or . Taking garlic by mouth for H. However, when garlic cloves, powder, or oil is used in humans, it does not seem to help treat people infected with H. Research on the effects of garlic on cholesterol and triglyceride levels is inconsistent. Some research shows that garlic might have beneficial effects short- term. However, garlic does not seem to have any benefits after 6 months. Also, if only the high quality studies are considered, garlic does not appear to lower cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Lung cancer. Taking garlic by mouth does not seem to reduce the risk of developing lung cancer. Mosquito repellent. Taking garlic by mouth does not seem to repel mosquitos. Leg pain caused by poor blood circulation in the legs (peripheral arterial disease or PAD). Taking garlic by mouth for 1. High blood pressure in pregnancy (pre- eclampsia). Early evidence suggests that taking a specific garlic extract (Garlet) daily during the third trimester of pregnancy does not reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure in women who are at high risk or pregnant for the first time. Insufficient Evidence to Rate Effectiveness for.. Hair loss (alopecia areata). Early evidence suggests that applying a garlic 5% gel along with a topical steroid for 3 months increases hair growth in people with hair loss. Chest pain (angina). Early research suggests that administering garlic intravenously (by IV) for 1. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Early research suggests that taking a liquid garlic extract daily for one month reduces prostate mass and urinary frequency. But the quality of this research is questionable. Common cold. Early research suggests that garlic might reduce the frequency and number of colds when taken for prevention. Clogged arteries (coronary heart disease). Some early research suggests that taking a specific garlic product (Allicor, INAT- Farma, Moscow, Russia) for 1. Other early research suggests that taking a supplement containing aged garlic (Kyolic, Total Heart Health, Formula 1. Wakunga) might prevent clogged arteries from worsening. Early research suggests that applying certain garlic extracts to corns on the feet twice daily improves corns. One particular garlic extract that dissolves in fat seems to work after 1. Cancer in the esophagus. Early research on the use of garlic for preventing cancer in the esophagus is inconsistent. Some evidence suggests that eating raw garlic does not prevent the development of cancer in the esophagus. However, other population research suggests that consuming garlic weekly does decrease the risk of developing cancer in the esophagus. Muscle soreness after exercise. Early evidence suggests that taking allicin, a chemical in garlic, daily for 1. Exercise performance. Early research suggests that taking a single 9. Lumpy breast tissue (fibrocystic breast disease). Early research suggests that taking a specific combination product (Karinat, INAT- Farma, Moscow Russia) containing garlic, beta- carotene, vitamin E, and vitamin C twice daily for 6 months reduces the severity of breast pain, premenstrual syndrome, and lumpy breast tissue in people with fibrocystic breast disease. Stomach cancer. Some research suggests that eating more garlic is linked to a lower risk of developing stomach cancer. But taking a specific aged garlic extract (Kyolic, Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Co) does not seem to reduce the risk of developing pre- cancer in the stomach. Stomach inflammation (gastritis). Early research suggests that taking a specific combination product containing garlic (Karinat, INAT- Farma, Moscow Russia) twice daily for 6 months improves digestion, stops the growth of certain bacteria (H. However, the effect of garlic alone has not been determined. Early research suggests that taking garlic oil together with diphenyl- dimethyl- dicarboxylate improves liver function in people with hepatitis. However, the effects of garlic alone are not clear. Shortness of breath and low oxygen levels associated with liver disease (hepatopulmonary syndrome). Early research suggests that taking garlic oil for 9- 1. Lead poisoning. Early research suggests that taking garlic three times daily for 4 weeks can reduce blood lead concentrations in people with lead poisoning. Common Sense Boxing Diet. Learn how to eat right to fight harder, gain lean muscle weight, burn fat, or just look sexy! This isn’t just a boxing diet plan, it’s a common sense diet plan for anybody to feel and look like a champ! A NOTE TO THE READERS: I’m hardly an expert on nutrition or dieting. I barely know how to cook! HOWEVER, I did speak to boxing coaches, personal trainers, fighters, doctors, one nutritionist, and even friends that lost weight. If there was anybody that could teach me anything about dieting, I made sure to ask them. So my first week of 52 diets in 52 weeks was a lot of fun. I didn't expect much out of the 8 hour diet. I mainly picked that diet so I could sort of ease into the. Most importantly, I made sure that everything the experts told me did not conflict with anything my trainers told me. The following is a combination of their knowledge and my own personal experience. Boxing Diet for Lifelong Health. Fortunately for me, boxing was my catalyst to seeking healthy food. I was born with fast metabolism and stayed skinny my whole life. It wasn’t until I tried boxing that I saw the difference between looking in- shape and being in- shape. You must eat well to perform well and it was then that I realized the true value of good nutrition. If it wasn’t for boxing, I might have eaten junk food for the rest of my life. Poor Dieting Habits of the Modern Lifestyle. I blame recent technology and modern society for creating busier lives and contributing to poor eating habits. It is more convenient, socially and personally rewarding to eat crap as we maintain busier lifestyles in school, work, or training. Time- crunched days often lead to frequent periods of starvation and over- eating. Diet conveniences come in the form of junk food or restaurants more focused on providing a “dining experience” than actual healthy food. The only thing most people know about healthy dieting is “fat is bad and avoid junk food” and yet the average person today eats more junk food and fat foods than ever before. Proper dieting has become quite the mystery over the years. The Death Clock / Life Span Clock gives you the approximate year of your death. Figure out how many more precious seconds have you got to live! I’m not sure how it came to be that we humans have lost our ability to eat intelligently, something we were born to do naturally. The way I see it, successful marketing has been repackaging the same facts about proper dieting over and over again to be resold to the poorly- informed (and overly self- conscious) public. I’ve heard of the protein diet, the atkins diet, the vegetarian diet, the high- carb diet, the low- carb diet, and the SLOW- carb diet. I’ve been a successful athlete my entire life without ever following any of those. At worst, these diets restrict your food intake to ridiculously small amounts. These crazy diets work for a little while, until your body suffers from starvation or deficiencies in essential nutrients. At best, these diets are simply a new name for a good old fashion healthy diet! I don’t need to reinvent the science of nutrition. The secret to eating right has more to do with common sense than all the science in the world! Dieting Common Sense: You need to eat everything. Carb, protein, fats — they’re all essential to your body; the key is moderation. You need to eat at the right time. Don’t starve when your body needs energy, and don’t over- eat when you have enough. Timing your meals allow you to stay full on less food. Your diet should fit your needs. Diets are not one- size- fits- all. Everyone’s bodies, lifestyles, diets, and dieting goals are different. A weight loss diet for one person might lead to weight gain for another. Healthy dieting requires: TIMING (of meals)VARIETY (of foods)BALANCE (of nutrients)MODERATION (of portions)The Boxing Diet. As a fighter, eating properly increases your performance, decreases your recovery time, while maintaining a lean (and sexy) body weight. Boxers need more nutrients than the average person to workout, develop and repair the body. A boxer’s diet must: provide energy for physical performanceprovide nutrients for rapid muscle developmentdecrease body fat. The boxing diet varies from a normal diet in that you have to center your diets around your workouts. You need nutrients to fuel the intense workout and begin recovery right after. Eating around the workout is what makes the boxer’s diet so hard. It’s easy to under- eat and end up starving during your workout or over- eat because you feel so hungry after the workout. It’s not enough to say that “an athlete requires more nutrition than the average person.” Managing the boxer’s diet is TRICKY! There’s timing, calculation, and balance involved! The boxer has to eat more, without over- eating! WHEN to Eat. Knowing WHEN to eat,is as important as knowing WHAT to eat. Our #1 problem is figuring out when to eat. Fruits are good, junk foods are bad, etc) If you’re eating healthy but still not losing weight, it’s probably your timing that’s off. If you don’t eat at the right time, it matters very little whether you eat healthy or not–because the food gets transformed into fat anyway! The #1 diet problem. Not eating when the body needs food, and then over- eating when finally eating. If you wait till your stomach is grumbling, your body is already starving (decreased energy and recovery rate). Extreme hunger is usually countered with the next diet mistake, over- eating, which increases fat storage. One mistake usually leads to the other, putting your body in a vicious cycle of starvation (decreased metabolism) followed by periods of over- eating (fat gain). Good diet plan of 6 meals a daysmaller meals keep you energized and full throughout the daysnacks keep you from starving during long workouts and in between mealssmaller meals keep your metabolism high while avoiding over- eating. Eating smaller meals more closely matches your body’s energy use. Your biggest meals are in the mornings and the one before your workout. Smaller meals keep you satisfied without putting extra calories into you. Small Meals a Day. Gizmodo has asked Body Vibes to provide us with the peer-reviewed research that supports their claim that their “astronaut” stickers have any impact on the human. Discover How The “Health Foods” You're Eating Every Day Are Making Your Fat Cells SICK. Making it IMPOSSIBLE to lose weight, while also damaging your joints. Contrary to what you (or your trainer) might believe, endorphins aren’t responsibly for that giddy exuberance you feel after a long run. What is associated with the. Eating 5 to 6 small meals a day is the best advice I can give and it really works. Boxers looking to make weight follow this religiously. Every friend I’ve had that lost 5. If there is anything you learn from reading this guide, let it be this one: Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day! My friend explained meal- timing in these simple terms: Start eating before you get too hungry. Stop eating before you get too full. Biggest Meal in the Morning. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s the first supply of nutrients for your day and kickstarts your body’s metabolism. Once you have a full breakfast, you can make it through the rest of the day on smaller meals to avoid getting hungry. Don’t be silly and skip breakfast as part of your weight loss plan. This leaves you hungry and sends your body into starvation mode (decreasing metabolism), making it stingy for energy and storing everything you eat as fat. You You need to have energy to start your day; you need to eat good breakfast. Breakfast AFTER Your Morning Run. If you do your runs in the morning, it’s best to eat breakfast after that. First off, running on a full stomach is a terrible idea. Secondly, running on an empty stomach helps you lose weight because your body will be burning off stored fat instead of the food you ate that day. It’s not necessary to do your runs in the morning, but the common belief is that it burns off fat stored from the previous night and energizes you for the day. The Pre- Workout Meal. Aside from breakfast, the workout meal is the second and only other big meal on your training day. It has to fuel your intense workout without going overboard and storing fat. You should eat 2 hours before the workout. The workout meal should be big enough to sustain your whole workout. If you’re doing a 3. If you’re like me and spend 5 hours sweating non- stop in the gym, you need a big meal. Eat light foods so that you’re not training with a half a steak still digesting in your stomach. Eating within 3. 0 minutes of your workout triggers your body’s recovery phase immediately. A boxer needs only 2 big meals a day at most; One for breakfast and another 2 hours before training. NOTE: if your workout comes early in the day, it is possible to have just one big meal. You would use the same big meal as your breakfast and pre- workout meal. Smallest Meals at Night. Later meals in the day should be kept small so that you’re not going to bed starving, but also not sleeping with unused calories. Eating before sleeping is one of the easiest ways to get fat. Your biggest meals (like breakfast and before workout) come earlier so that you have all day to burn off the calories. WHAT to Eat. This is probably the most common subject of dieting. What should I eat? The nutrients you need in large quantities are: water (essential, vital to living)carbs (for energy)protein (muscle growth & recovery)fats (vital to organs, secondary energy source)Then comes nutrients you need in small quantities: vitamins & minerals (boost immune system, support cell growth, organ functions, healthy skin, strong bones)fiber (move food through digestive system, keeps your digestive system running smoothly–helps you eat less)Basically, you need everything. Eating a wide variety of foods is key to proper functioning, growth, repair, and maintenance of your body. Deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances in diet will lead to reduced physical performance, illness, and many other negative impacts on health. Now let’s review the different types of nutrients: Water. Water is the most vital substance in your body; you need water to live. Over 5. 0% of your body weight is made up of water. From an athletic standpoint, you need water to replace fluids lost through sweating. Water: transports oxygen & nutrientsremoves waste & toxinsregulates body temperaturefacilitates digestionendless more important bodily functions. It’s no surprise that you will die sooner from dehydration than from starvation. You must drink water all the time. There is no substitute for water, not even Powerade. I recommend serious boxers to drink 2- 3 gallons of water per day, spread out into 1 cup every hour, starting with one right when you wake up and ending with one right before you go to bed.

Helping and Preventing Feline Diabetes. Protocol for Success in Managing Feline Diabetes. REMEMBER, NEVER START OR CONTINUE ANY VETERINARY MEDICAL TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR YOUR PET WITHOUT THE SUPERVISION OF YOUR PET'S VETERINARIAN. INFORMATION AVAILBLE ON THIS SITE IS FOR GENERAL INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY AND SHOULD NEVER REPLACE THE ADVICE OF YOUR PET'S VETERINARIAN! This protocol consists of three indispensable parts: proper diet for the obligatorycarnivore that is diabetic, proper drug/hormone therapy (that is, the right insulin), and proper use of that drug therapy and that diet to restore the patient to normal pancreatic function. I. Diet. Because improper diet is the cause of type II diabetes mellitus in the cat, diet must be the foundation of the management of this disease. The first is the high amount of carbohydrate in them (no, they are not immune from the requirement of extruded foods for high cereal content) which promotes high blood glucose notwithstanding the fiber contained in them. The American Heart Association offers advice and tips on managing your weight, losing weight and obesity information. These diets are usually “low fat” as well as high- fiber and because of this, much of the usual fat in the formula has been replaced with even more digestible carbohydrate than is present in regular formulas (in the highly mistaken belief that it is dietary fat that makes cats fat). The second serious flaw is the high fiber itself. Proper insulin. Protamine zinc insulin is, by far, the most effective form of insulin available for use in the diabetic cat today. Although one small study has shown that Lantus (glargine) can be used to create remission in new diabetics on low- carb (wet only) cat foods, this study does not really prove that Lantus is superior to PZI as the method of use of the PZI in the study was not optimal and considering that brand new diabetics will readily go into remission regardless of the insulin used as long as low- carbohydrate wet foods are fed to these cats. Further, Lantus is a human insulin product and at least theoretically more antigenic (allergy producing) in the cat than the bovine- origin PZI insulins. Blood glucose control strategy- Tight Regulation. It is “conventional wisdom” that hypoglycemia in the feline diabetic is to be feared more than any other eventuality. In fact, if we could test our healthy patients without the stress of the hospital environment elevating their blood glucose levels in our clinics, we would realize that most cats are perfectly happy with levels around 6. As a matter of fact, brand new diabetics often respond to a change of diet alone, and never need insulin because the pancreas has not really gone “dormant” from chronic hyperglycemia at that point. Immediate relief from dietary glucose overload can allow immediate reactivation of the cat’s own pancreatic capabilities. The cat with acute diabetes, however, like its more chronic colleagues, will never be able to consume high carbohydrate (dry) foods again for its entire life, and its owners must understand this. Such a cat will become diabetic very quickly once again if its pancreas is stressed again by high sugar foods, or steroid medications, which are toxic in the previously- diabetic as well as the dry- food- fed cat. In the more chronic diabetic, diet alone will often not provide immediate cure. This is only logical. However, you will not be able to predict with certainty merely from the duration of the cat’s disease process whether or not a particular cat can been cured. We have seen cats with relatively long histories respond well, in time (several months), to proper regulatory efforts. Because continual high blood glucose perpetuates the pancreatic suppression/toxicity that has caused the diabetes in the first place, cure can only happen if insulin is used to effectively bring the diabetic cat into the normal range for glucose in this species. In hundreds of cats that I have put through this protocol using low carbohydrate foods, I have never caused a single one to seizure, despite taking many well below 1. The method of managing the feline diabetic that I use has been called “Tight Regulation.” This name describes the fact that this protocol uses proper diet and the correct insulin to bring the cat’s blood glucose levels into a tight range around normal for healthy cats. Learning to use such a device on a cat is simple and easy; I have never had a client who could not learn to use a glucometer with great skill in a very short time (see www. Some veterinarians use a test called a fructosamine test to determine the level of diabetes control in a particular patient on insulin. Expert Reviewed. Drugs for short- term use. Diethylpropion (Tenuate), phentermine (Adipex- P), benzphetamine (Didrex) and phendimetrazine are approved for only short- term use — generally less than 1. These drugs are classified as controlled substances because they have the potential to be abused. Because of possible side effects, these drugs aren't recommended if you have heart disease, high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism. Drugs for long- term use. Orlistat (Xenical), lorcaserin (Belviq), phentermine- topiramate (Qsymia), naltrexone- bupropion (Contrave) and liraglutide (Saxenda) are approved for long- term use. Orlistat is also available in a reduced- strength form without a prescription (Alli). Limiting your intake of dietary fat is critical when taking orlistat to minimize side effects. After orlistat was approved, rare cases of serious liver injury were reported in some people taking it. No cause- and- effect relationship was established. However, Xenical and Alli labels now advise people taking orlistat to be alert to signs and symptoms that could indicate liver injury, such as itching, loss of appetite, yellow eyes or skin, light- colored stool, or brown urine. Lorcaserin (Belviq) initially raised concerns because it works somewhat like fenfluramine — which was withdrawn from the market because it damaged heart valves. However, there is no evidence that Belviq damages heart valves. Belviq may increase heart rate, so people taking it may need to have their heart rate checked. The combination drug Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) increases the risk of birth defects. Thus, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required the manufacturer to have a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS). The REMS is intended to alert women to the risks and explain the need to avoid becoming pregnant while taking Qsymia. In addition, Qsymia is considered a controlled substance because one of its ingredients — phentermine — has the potential for abuse. The combination drug Contrave contains naltrexone and bupropion. Naltrexone is used to treat alcohol and opioid dependence, while bupropion is an antidepressant that often reduces the risk of weight gain in people who are trying to quit smoking. Contrave also can raise heart rate and blood pressure and may increase the risk of seizures. Bupropion can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Liraglutide (Saxenda) is the newest drug to be approved for weight loss. The FDA approved it with the requirement that the manufacturer have a REMS to inform doctors about the serious risks associated with Saxenda. Saxenda has a boxed warning stating that tumors of the thyroid gland have been observed in animal studies but that it is unknown whether Saxenda causes these tumors in humans. Unlike the other weight- loss drugs, Saxenda is administered by injection once daily. Factors to consider. If you meet the criteria for prescription weight- loss drugs, you and your doctor will need to evaluate the potential benefits against the possible risks of taking the medicine. Although not FDA- approved for weight loss, naltrexone and topamax seem to induce weight loss in a majority of individuals. You must have a valid medical prescription to obtain them. If you feel like they might be right for you, you can ask your doctor to prescribe either drug for you off- label. Keep in mind, however, that because these drugs have not yet been approved in the treatment of obesity, you may experience adverse reactions that are not yet known to occur. Feel better and stay healthier with slow- release carbohydrates. Whole Grains. Your body digests whole grains more slowly than refined grains, which have been stripped of their bran and germ, and thus fiber, and are absorbed almost as quickly as pure glucose. Whole grains - - barley, oats, brown rice, wild rice and bulgur - - and products made from whole grains, such as whole- wheat breads, bagels, pasta and crackers, and 1. Quickly absorbed, refined carbohydrates are linked to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and weight gain, notes the Harvard School of Public Health. Whole grains may decrease your risk of these conditions. Fruits and Vegetables. Eat dark green vegetables, such as spinach, kale and broccoli; and orange vegetables, such as squash, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and winter squash. Vegetables that are quickly absorbed include white potatoes, corn and parsnips. Whole fruits are preferable to fruit juice, which is absorbed rapidly due to its lack of fiber. Beans. Not only are beans an excellent source of slow- release carbohydrates, they're also a good source of protein and fiber, which slow the digestive process further. Beans - - like whole grains, and most fruits and vegetables - - have a low glycemic index, a measurement that gives information on how a food affects blood sugar and insulin levels. Filling your plate with the F word was seen as an express ticket to heart disease. The low- carb high- fat diet (or LCHF diet for short), which can also go by the Atkins diet brand name, is ridiculed for causing high cholesterol by giving people license to gorge on damaging red meats and full- fat cheeses. Meanwhile, carb- loading became a religion to endurance athletes hoping to avoid the feared hitting- of- the- wall. Then, trends began to change. The common criticism of the Atkins diet was debunked: Popular science suggested that a low- carb diet that's high in fat diet actually improved HDL, or “good” cholesterol, and didn’t worsen LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. And in the '8. 0s, Stephen Phinney—a MIT medical researcher—noticed that the carb- loading math just didn’t add up. Our bodies only have a limited store of glycogen, or the fuel in your muscles, about 2,5. But our bodies have about 5. Phinney wondered if athletes could train their bodies to burn fat instead of carbs. Your body naturally burns carbs to keep your muscles moving—and carbs are the quickest form of fuel to convert into energy. But “think of glycogen as the gas in the tank of the car,” says Pam Bede, R. D., sports dietitian for Abbott’s EAS Sports Nutrition. When that gas is low, you need to refuel, which is where gels and GUs come in. If your body could burn fat, Phinney thought, you could go a heck of a lot longer before refueling. While plenty of studies show that a LCHF diet results in lower peak power and VO2 max—meaning it more or less makes you slower—he found that cyclists indeed performed just as well on a two and a half hour ride when they ate a diet low in carbs and high in fat as when they ate their traditional training diet. With an ideal meal plan, you’re taking in roughly 5. Bede. Phinney’s model was imperfect: When he tested cyclist’s sprinting capabilities on the LCHF diet, he noticed fat- fueled athletes clocked in at a slower time than normal. Fast forward some 4. Simon Whitfield and Ben Greenfield have renounced the church of carbs in favor of a high- fat diet instead. Kim Kardashian famously followed the Atkins diet to shed her baby weight. Melissa Mc. Carthy attributed her impressive 4. And, furthermore, is it healthy? Can It Improve Your Fitness? The effect of a low- carb, high- fat diet on athletic performance has only been looked at in a handful of studies since Phinney’s original experiment. Add vegetables like French beans, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, carrots, lettuce, spinach, asparagus, pumpkins, and eggplants to your diet. Add a healthy portion of red.And when it comes to high speeds, Bede says it makes sense why LCHF would slow you down: “Carbs are a fairly efficient way to burn fuel, so if you’re running at high speeds and need that energy immediately, carbohydrates are going to be a better source of fuel,” Bede explains. Because it takes longer for your body to access the energy in fat, you won't be able to perform as quickly. If you’re focused on distance and not speed, though, don’t write off LCHF so soon. It actually helps with that moment every runner dreads: hitting the wall. It can help delay that significant onset of fatigue, which is favorable because it enables an athlete to rely less on carbohydrate gels or fluid carbohydrates—and to go faster for longer,” says Georgie Fear, R. D., author of Lean Habits For Lifelong Weight Loss. Another added bonus: You’ll avoid the all- too- common side effect of gastric distress from race gels and GUs. Avoid these 2. 0 Foods that Can Ruin Your Workout too.)But like much of the LCHF research, the scientific evidence is mixed—it’s still a vastly under- researched area. The most promising study to date is expected to come out later this year from Jeff Volek, Ph. D., R. D., at the Ohio State University, the second most prolific researcher on the topic next to Phinney. Beyond the research, there’s also a growing wave of triathletes and ultra- runners who attribute their success to jumping on the fat- fueling bandwagon. Fitness coach Ben Greenfield finished the 2. Ironman Canada in under 1. Timothy Olson set a record for fastest completion of the Western States 1. LCHF diet. Until you begin a low- carb high- fat diet plan, try these 6 Foods to Fix Your Mood.)Whether or not it improves performance, teaching your body to pull from your fat reserves—which you can do by simply switching to the diet—does offer better blood sugar stability, Fear adds. This helps prevent hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar (which is the reason Hyvon Ngetich collapsed and had to—now famously—crawl across the finish at this year’s Austin Marathon). LCHF also helped strength athletes lose fat without compromising their strength or power, found a new study in Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews. That means that while people may not have seen performance gains, performance didn’t suffer—plus they lost weight, Bede explains. But Can the Atkins Diet Really Help You Lose Weight? While the now- popular weight loss angle has gotten slightly more scientific attention thanks to interested nutrition researchers, there is yet to be overwhelming evidence in either direction. But most of the limited research on weight loss and the low- carb high- fat diet has been in favor of it. In theory, it makes sense that you’d lose weight: “Carbohydrates attract water, so part of the initial weight loss is shedding of water stores,” says Bede. While it does have more calories per gram than a carbohydrate, you can only eat so much before you are full—similar to protein.” With carbs, you can finish that whole bag of pretzels without meaning to. If you’re avoiding refined carbs, you’re also avoiding the cravings for more unhealthy foods that research has shown they cause. A study last year in the Annals of Internal Medicine made one of the most convincing cases yet: Researchers found that men and women who switched to a low- carb diet lost 1. A new diet plan called the Zero Belly Diet is showing to how to lose belly fat with healthy eating and weight loss tips. From taking a walk before breakfast to. Low Carb High Fat Diet, LCHF Diet, Atkins Diet—regardless of what you call it, does this eating plan actually help you lose weight? The high- fat group also maintained more muscle, trimmed more body fat, and increased their protein intake more than their carb- heavy counterparts. These results are promising not only because researchers looked at the diet long- term, but also because they didn’t limit how many calories the participants could eat, debunking the idea that a LCHF diet only works as well as any other calorie- capped diet. But whether you should even try it is up for debate among our experts. Fear, for example, isn’t crazy about LCHF as a sustainable diet dogma. And the science agrees that there is little harm—other than to your speed—to trying it out. It probably will help you lose weight, and there is still a chance it’ll help your distance or power performance. And if your first instinct on hearing “restrict your carbs” is “yeah right,” you don’t actually have to be quite so rigid: The high- fat group in the Annals of Internal Medicine study made all of their weight- loss gains despite the fact that they never actually kept their carb goals as low as the study guidelines. Plus, at its roots, the Atkins diet or any low- carb high- fat diet is all about healthy eating, which everyone can benefit from. And this brings up the point: “The benefit of the diet could potentially be in ditching the junk and loading up on the whole foods more than the actual fat itself.” (See: Carbs Without Cause: 8 Foods Worse than White Bread.)Just know that you have to give your body at least two weeks to learn how to use fat as fuel—a phase known as fat adaptation, Bede advises. And while saturated fats, like those in cheese, have gotten the biggest reputation makeover, there is still a place for unsaturated fats in your diet as well. Check it out! Please note that this method takes planning and commitment but it is well worth it! Also please make sure your workouts are up to par by implementing a well thought out training plan. Why This Bodybuilding Diet Is The Best. So how can this nutritional strategy produce massive muscle gains? There is a way to increase anabolic (muscle- building) hormones in the body in the same way that steroids do. The only difference is, it's safe and natural. This diet will naturally maximize your body's production of the following anabolic hormones: Sounds good doesn't it? You will also have controlled insulin spikes which allows the body to have high levels of growth hormone and insulin at the same time! This does not usually happen and you'll see extremely impressive muscle gains as a result. What Causes Muscle Growth? Ok, apart from the actual exercise itself, what is the driver of muscle hypertrophy? We've been told over and over again that it's excess calories; you must eat more calories than you expend to encourage muscle growth. I'm going to hypothesize something a little controversial. Calories are also an effect, not just a cause. Think of a growing child. Are we to assume that vertical growth is caused by excess calories? I think the release of growth hormone is what makes a child grow. Increased growth hormone then causes the child to eat more. I think we have causality round the wrong way here. The traditional advice from bodybuilding gurus is to eat everything in sight to increase muscle size. They usually recommend high carb diets laden with oats, protein shakes with fruit, wholemeal bread, potato, rice (I don't care if it's white or brown) etc. Worse still, they often recommend a low- fat diet! Hey, I thought you were trying to grow some serious muscle? If so, you're gonna want to keep the fat intake up. If I'm right, then what we want to devise is a nutritional strategy that ignites the release of anabolic hormones. In turn then, these hormones will let us know when and how much to eat. How? By getting hungry - just like a growing child does. See how causality has been reversed? It's no longer.. Excess Calories = Muscle Growth. It's now.. Anabolic Hormones = Muscle Growth (which will drive your appetite & provide sufficient calories). Don't get me wrong, sufficient calories are required to build muscle, but it's important to understand the chain of causality. Calorie consumption isn't something you need to labor over which will cripple your life. Let your body dictate your food intake. The best calorie- counter is your stomach: when you're hungry - eat; when you're not - don't eat. Breakdown Of This Bodybuilding Diet. This plan requires that you eat a high protein, high fat, low carbohydrate diet for 5 and a half days. Then for 3. 6 hours you carb- up. The high protein, high fat part of the diet is what sparks the increase in blood serum levels. Fat Adaptation. As you will be keeping your carbohydrate level low for most of the week, your body will become a fat- burning machine. At the beginning of the diet your body will undergo a 'metabolic shift' and start to burn fat as its primary source of energy. This can take as little as 2 days and up to 1. However, the vast majority of you will have become fat- adapted by the end of your first 5 and a half days. The advantages of this are: Increased lipolysis (breakdown of fat)Decreased lipogenesis (production of fat)Decreased catabolism (muscle protein is spared from breakdown)Insulin Isn't Your Enemy. Regular low- carb dieters want to avoid spikes in insulin levels but for the bodybuilder, a controlled spike will do you a world of good. You'll use a 3. 2- 3. I use the weekends for this) to deliberately cause an insulin spike. Insulin can make you fat, no doubt about it. Insulin has a dramatic effect on decreasing lipolysis i. Increasing insulin through a carb- loading period is beneficial because: It helps shuttle amino acids into the muscle cells. Increases protein synthesis in skeletal muscle. Glycogen supercompensation (Replenish Muscle Glycogen To Fuel Workouts). Growth Hormone & Insulin. As stated previously you will also reap the anabolic effects of increasing insulin, growth hormone and testosterone at the same time. Usually when insulin levels increase, the others decrease and vise versa. It seems that the body (once fat adapted) sees the intake of high carbs at the weekend as a stressful situation and releases growth hormone as a survival mechanism. Increased growth hormone is your body's way of mobilizing energy stores to deal with this stressful situation and so at this time you can get elevated insulin and growth hormone levels simultaneously - welcome to muscle- building heaven! Traditional High- Carb Muscle- Building Diets. On a high carb diet, (usually recommended for the bulking phase of a bodybuilding lifestyle) insulin levels are chronically elevated. You therefore don't get the edge of maximum release of testosterone, growth hormone and IGF- 1. Also on the high carb approach, you prevent your body from using body fat for fuel and actually encourage the laying down of new body fat. That's.. Decreased lipolysis. Increased lipogenesis. Your Unique Carbohydrate Threshold Level. The best thing about this bodybuilding diet is that it's tailor- fitted to your unique metabolic type; it's not a one- size- fits- all diet. You will find your unique carb threshold level and this will allow you to: Gain muscle without fat. Lose fat without sacrificing lean mass (when cutting)Your carb threshold level can be defined as . Don't make any changes to this for at least a week because you need to make the metabolic switch to burning fat for fuel first. Once this is completed you will be able to tell from your workout performances whether or not you need some more carbs (if so increase in 5 gram per day increments). I personally average at around 2. Some days I take in 3. Going higher or lower is fine, just check your weekly averages. This low amount of carbohydrate is enough to power me through some amazing workouts; I've got bags of energy and feel great. Post- Workout Nutrition. Some of you may be wondering about post- workout carbs. There is simply no need for the astronomical amount of post- workout carbs a lot of people ingest. So, do I advise post- workout carbs? Yes, a little. Post- workout carbs aren't magical either, you must count them towards your daily totals. So, I usually take around 1. If, for example, I work just my abs alone, then no post- workout carbs are required; some protein (4. L- Glutamine (3- 5 grams) does the trick. I remember being advised years ago that I needed around 6. It's no surprise now, with a little education, that I got fat. Also, remember creating daily insulin spikes will have an adverse effect on growth hormone levels so follow this to the letter. Your Carb- Up Period. This is perfect as you can enjoy your life too after being so strict during the week. Have some pizza, Chinese, whatever you feel like. Take your woman out for a meal, have some beers with the guys and rest assured that your actually benefiting from this. I limit the junk meals to 2 and the rest of the time I eat a mostly high- carb, moderate fat, moderately- low protein diet. It isn't an excuse to go completely nuts but let your hair down a little. Again, there's no reason to eat past satiation, let your gut decide how much to eat. There is no real limit on the amount of carbs you can have. The key is just to watch the time it takes for you to begin to smooth- out (lose definition); it may take a little bit of experimentation at first and it will be different for everyone; 3. You'll notice that every week you go through a mini- cycle of being bigger and smaller; this is just due to fluctuating water levels. When you begin to low- carb you'll flush out some water, it's perfectly natural. Continually monitor your weight in conjunction with your body fat levels. If you notice that by Saturday afternoon, you're smoothing out a little bit too much, you know that you'll have to limit your carb- up period to 2. Won't I get fat if I eat too many calories on the low- carb, weekday section? GERD diet and healthy meal plans for acid reflux relief. Reflux. Lacto- ovo vegetarian diets include dairy products and eggs, lacto- vegetarian diets include dairy but not eggs, and total vegetarian diets, also known as vegan diets, do not include eggs or dairy products. The adaptations required for GERD symptoms vary by the type of vegetarian diet you follow. Fruits and vegetables - - with the exception of citrus and tomatoes - - form the foundation of a healthy diet for GERD. Rian Podein of the University of Wisconsin- Madison says that flavonoids found in fruits and vegetables curb the growth of bacteria that contribute to stomach acidity. Podein specifically suggests eating broccoli or broccoli sprouts at least twice a week. Grains are generally GERD neutral. Safe protein sources for vegetarians with GERD include egg whites, egg substitutes, non- cow’s milk dairy products such as feta or chevre cheese, and legumes. In the 2. 00. 7 edition of his book “Integrative Medicine”, University of Washington professor David Rakel says that substances in cow’s milk trigger GERD symptoms for some people. Cow’s milk foods to limit include milk, yogurt, low- fat cottage cheese and cheeses such as cheddar or mozzarella. Foods made from whole soy - - such as tofu, edamame, soy milk or cheese and soy . However, because their fat content can potentiate acid secretion, you should proceed with caution and avoid consuming them at the end of the day or as part of a large meal. Podein says that all people with GERD should avoid fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine, peppermint, alcohol, citrus fruits and tomato products. For vegetarians, this means avoiding fried tofu, fried eggs and fatty dairy products such as ice cream or sour cream. Fermented foods such as miso and tempeh also can pose problems. The ADA says that some vegetarians have difficulty meeting needs for vitamin B1. If you are a vegetarian who also takes over- the- counter or prescription medications for GERD, ask your doctor about monitoring these nutrients. Acids in the stomach help your body absorb them, but GERD medications decrease the acidity of your stomach by neutralizing secreted acid, in the case of antacids, or decreasing acid secretion, in the case of H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors. Over time, deficiencies in these nutrients can produce complications such as anemia, osteoporosis and, in the case of B1. If you continue to experience symptoms despite making changes to your diet, see your doctor, who might recommend other treatments to control your GERD. Also ask about registered dietitian services. Modifying a vegetarian diet to accommodate GERD can be difficult. A registered dietitian can help you tailor your diet to your individual food preferences and lifestyle, or to manage another health problem, such as diabetes.
